Navigation course

Taken from a letter to Hugh Budgen.

With reference to your appeal in AIR MAIL, I was stationed at R.A.F. CRANAGE from 9th November 1940 to 3rd January 1941 for a short navigation course prior to being posted to a Hampden O.T.U. I remember very little about the station and any information is in my Log Book. I do remember seeing the glow of Manchester burning after an Air Raid.

Here are the details from my log book:-

No info on the routes taken.

All flights with P/O SPIERS as a fellow pupil. I don’t know if he survived the war.

I was one of the very fortunate pilots to survive 2 Tours of Operations in Bomber Command on Hampdens & Lancs & was on a 3rd Tour in 38 Group on Stirlings when the war ended. I carried on Civil Flying after the war with B.S.A.A. & B.O.A.C.

I hope this information is of use in your research.

Yours sincerely

Hugh H. Grant-Dalton
