I received a telephone call from Mr Crompton’s son, Mike, on April 25, 2013.

Mike is looking into his father’s service history and has discovered that he was selected, by Sqn/Ldr McKinley to be part of the crew for the Aries project.

His training qualifications show that he was qualified T/Cpl in 1944 as Airframe Rigger Wellington, Anson, Magister and Moth.

Mr Crompton senior transferred to R.A.F. Shawbury with the Central Navigation School and continued to work with the Aries project. In his records he is shown as ‘Absent’ from 1330 15/5/43 – 0620 17/5/43 & 10.00 18/5/43 – 0800 19/5/43 (3days) the entry ref 117/13 – He was 14 days CC 19/5/43 for this. These times and dates tie in with flights made by Aries.
