Heritage Open days, Tours Galore! – 9th, 10th September 2011

Explore the Ancient Town Of Middlewich and get a special insight into an historic Salt Town In Cheshire. 10am –2pm, The base for the tours will be No 28 Hightown, opposite the Church. Tours are free. Choose from Roman, Canal and Salt, Town or Church of St Michael guided tours.
 
The tours will be departing every hour, the last at 1pm. Number 28 has tea & coffee facilities, chance to chat, with background music from one or both of the project CD’s. There’s a goody bag to take home, with items such as Ancient Middlewich leaflet, Pen, bookmark, What’s on guide, Canal & Salt, Roman trails, Middlewich Heritage Society leaflets, Roman Festival leaflet, Brine Pump Leaflet etc. The town display depends on venue and needs to be arranged nearer the time, but it is hoped that visitors can see historic images / maps of the town.

Roman Trails will also visit the library, where Roman artefacts have been placed on show, then proceed with the trail from there. 2 available tours on each day, max of 12 people on each. – For those with more time to ponder the history of the town and its development. (1 hour) 10am and 1pm. Pathways used on the route, road crossing involved, and towpath.

Canal and Salt Trail – tour begins with the church of St Michael and All Angels. – A walk to the sites that made Middlewich what it is today. 1 tour available at 11am, max of 12 people. (1.5 hours), Pathways used on the route, some road crossing, towpath. Easy walking, however there is a low bridge and bank when it comes to approaching the lock, an alternative path is available if required. Bring binoculars as we pass some fantastic wildlife sites!

Town Trails – Nice short trail through our historical town, informative and fact packed!

Special tours of St Michael and All Angels – Learn about the history of the church, its people and its place in the community, great opportunity to see the church in all its glory. – Friday tours take place at 10.00am, 10.30am, 1.30pm and 2pm. Saturday tours are every hour starting at 10am, 11am, 12 noon and 1pm. Tours last 30 mins; venue is across the road and seating is available at various points in the tour.

Small community exhibition at Base Site – Information on the various stages of the town’s development, depending on available room, we will also have items on display and a book stall.  Goody bags available from here to everyone/family taking part, you can also be part of the community heritage consultation during this event, have you say on heritage issues. Chairs and tables are laid out for people to use, good opportunity for tea, coffee and discussion.

If the weather is very bad, we will still run the church and town tours as normal and do a shorter version of the two other trails.
